SEPTEMBER 30 – DOCKERS’ MID-YEAR DRAFTEE GONE

Fremantle has made another delisting, with 2023 midyear pickup Ethan Stanley let go.

The wingman played two games, both times coming on as the sub, just weeks after being selected after an impressive stint at the VFL’s Box Hill Hawks plus a few games in the WAFL.

He ended up playing 22 times for Peel Thunder while on the Dockers’ list.

“These decisions are never easy but the club would like to thank Ethan for his contribution to our club over the past two seasons and we wish him all the best for the future,” Fremantle Executive General Manager of Football Joe Brierty said.

SEPTEMBER 26 – DEE ANNOUNCES SHOCK RETIREMENT

Melbourne winger and Western Bulldogs premiership player Lachie Hunter has announced his retirement from the sport at age 29.

Hunter retires after 199 games across the two clubs, with arguably his two biggest individual accolades coming in 2016 with his flag at the Bulldogs, before winning the club’s best and fairest in 2018.

Speaking on his retirement via a club statement, Hunter was extremely thankful for the opportunity he had across a dozen years in the system.

“I’ve loved every moment of my time as an AFL player. I’ve given it my all and pushed my body to its absolute limit,” Hunter told Melbourne FC.

“While my mind is willing, my body is clearly telling me that it’s time I move onto the next chapter in life. I’m incredibly proud of everything I’ve achieved throughout my career, and while the 2016 Premiership will forever be a highlight, the friendships I’ve built across the journey are just as special.

“I want to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my AFL career, in particular both the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Football Clubs for giving me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream. The support I’ve received from family, friends, coaches, teammates and the fans has been incredible, and I can’t thank them all enough.

Melbourne General Manager of Football Alan Richardson also showed his appreciation to Hunter later in the statement.

“Lachie should be extremely proud of what he has been able to achieve over a long period of time,” Richardson added.

“To play 12 seasons is testament to Lachie’s resilience and work ethic. It is a credit to him as a person that he can walk away from the game, content that he has given absolutely everything he can.

Hunter kicked 80 goals during his time in the league, and racked up a career-high 44 disposals in a game twice – once in 2016 and once in 2018.

SEPTEMBER 26 — PORT CUTS UNCAPPED YOUNGSTER

Port Adelaide has delisted untried defender Tom McCallum.

The 20-year-old battled injury since arriving at Alberton as a second-round draft pick in 2022, but he managed to play 30 SANFL games over the past two years.

“We thank Tom for his contribution to the club over the past two years,” list boss Jason Cripps said.

“He has dealt with some injury challenges over his time at the club but has shown patience and resilience.

“We wish him all the best for the next chapter of his career.”

The news of McCallum’s delisting follows the retirements of veterans Trent McKenzie and Charlie Dixon.

The statement also read: “Port Adelaide has made no further list changes at this time and will continue discussions with uncontracted players and their managers over the coming weeks.”

SEPTEMBER 25 – KEY FORWARD JOINS TEAMMATE IN RETIREMENT

Veteran and two-club forward Charlie Dixon has announced his retirement from the AFL after 14 seasons at the top level.

Only five days ago did Dixon play in the Power’s preliminary final loss to Sydney – which ended up being his 221st and final game since his debut in 2011.

An inaugural Gold Coast draftee, Dixon’s retirement comes just 24 hours after fellow two-club player and foundation defender Trent McKenzie.

“I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had so long in a game that has given me a lot of great memories,” Dixon said via a Port Adelaide club statement.

“While there have been a lot of challenges along the way, I feel really grateful to both Port Adelaide and the Gold Coast for the opportunities those clubs have provided and the friendships I’ve made along the way.

“It’ll be hard not coming through those doors and seeing some of my best mates every day, but I’m looking forward to what comes next.”

Long-time coach Ken Hinkley also praised the 200cm big man in the statement.

“I’ve known Charlie since he was a rough and raw teenager with a lot of promise,” Hinkley revealed.

“To see him grow and develop into the footballer, and more importantly the man he is today, gives me a great sense of pride.

“Charlie has always put his body on the line for his teammates, willing himself to every contest – sometimes with a number of opponents hanging off him.

“He’s been so highly regarded at our club for the role he plays in-game in terms of bringing his teammates into the game, and whether he is stepping into the ruck or providing guidance and advice for our young forwards, we can’t be more grateful for the contribution Charlie has made to Port Adelaide.”

Dixon kicked 357 goals across his career, with individual highlights including his selection in the 2020 All-Australian team, as well as being a three-time leading goal kicker at the Power.
